SBPLI Announces Award Winners at FIRST Championship
School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) announced that, of the seven robotics teams from Long Island attending the competition, four received awards at the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition (FRC) Championship, which was held April 15-17 at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia.
In the FRC, Team 263 (Sachem Central School District) “Sachem Aftershock,” and Team 271 (Bay Shore High School) “Mechanical Marauders” — who were Regional Finalists at last month’s Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) — were Quarterfinalists in the Galileo field.
Team 2638 (Great Neck South High School) “Rebels,” this year’s Long Island FRC Chairman’s Award winner, was a Finalist for the Underwriters Laboratories Industrial Safety Award. The Industrial Safety Award celebrates the team that progresses beyond safety fundamentals by using innovative ways to eliminate or protect against hazards.
Josh “Bob” Tobin of Great Neck South High School was chosen as one of the Student Stars of the Day at the FRC Championship. The award goes to the student that demonstrates best safety practices. In addition, Tobin’s teammates — Jason Lee, Andrew In and Dennis Hong — won the Lockheed Martin Virtual Challenge.
Other teams that participated in the FRC Championship included Team 358 (Hauppauge), Team 533 (Lindenhurst), Team 329 (Patchogue-Medford) and Team 527 (Plainedge)
